Starting A Business Tips – Do You Even Know What A Business Plan Is?

Many people want a business plan when starting a business while many others could care less. Some people think they know what one actually is when the fact is, what they’re talking about is just part of the overall plan. In this starting a business tips article, I’m going to discuss what business plan is and what isn’t.

Recently I was participating in online discussion forum when somebody asked what the best plan is. Truth is, there is no such thing as Best plan. Each one has its good and ugly side but that’s beside the point. This guy at the forum listed three things he was planning to do such as create a squeeze page with free offer as well as OTO on download page, creating his own product or creating an information site with affiliate products.

As a matter of fact I hate to burst your bubble but those are NOT business plans or anywhere close to one. They are just small pieces of an overall plan or rather a startup necessity. If you were to visit a bank for a loan and tell the bank manager that one of those were your business plan, you are not only going to be disappointed but probably laughed out of the bank without a loan. Now the question is what’s a business plan?

It is a whole business model. Let’s quickly examine the one small piece above, making your own product. You would need to outline what the product is, it’s market, your projected sales outcome, complimentary products, if you have any, your expected costs, your projected income, what your USP is, what marketing strategy you’re going to use, and so on. Every little thing needs to be in full details.

Putting up a review for an affiliate product is NOT a plan. In my opinion it’s a half baked attempt at earning some little income online which is ok if that is what you want.  For the love of Pete, please don’t call that a business plans because it’s certainly not.

This is one of the major mistakes that home business operators make. Not only do they not create a business plan but they don’t even know what one is. Without a concrete business plan, you stand a little chance of achieving success because you don’t have a goal or aim. At the end what happens is, it’s either the business is not as profitable as it ought to be or it folds up completely. A big thanks to your negligence.

When starting a business you need to carefully make your plans in order to succeed.

Best Wishes,

John Benjamin

Online Business Marketing Plan Development – Know Thy Customer!

Online Business Marketing Plan Development – Know Thy Customer!

The words Online Marketing Plan Development sound just a little bit daunting. It sounds hard to do and way too cumbersome! Let’s just skip that step! Nooooooo! We are here to help you through that step!

Why that is stepped so important? Well it helps us figure out the roadmap of our business. The all important, who is really our customer? How would we describe them? What are their likes and dislikes, their interests, their needs?

Because let’s face it, without knowing that, our businesses can be anything in terms of its personality, our product and service offerings, our staff, our pricing, etc. We have to put a stake in the ground as to what we want to stand for, where our guardrails are. It helps to define what our offer is and how we are choosing to compete. The areas where we will plan for superiority in the marketplace and other areas where being on par with our competitors will be just fine, thank you very much!

Our staffing decisions in our brick and mortar store should reflect our core customer target to some large degree through our ecommerce web site solutions. In our online store, it is reflected in our online store’s personality and tonality of our product descriptions, FAQs and definitely if we use live chat, the operators. This last is very hard to do unless we take care of the live chat ourselves. Alternatively, if we can hire a very big firm to handle this for us, then we have much more say so in how they are trained and how they reflect our online brand development. This is one area that is quite variable from a quality control perspective in regards to consistently reflecting our target customer.

Once we do this initial step in creating our online business marketing plan, then our challenge will be to stick to it. This is not a moving target. This is a bull’s eye that we should revisit annually, during our annual planning business reviews. Beyond that, this is a stake in the ground, so spend time on getting as close to right as we can be.

Small Business Marketing Tips ? Know Your Competition

Small Business Marketing Tips ? Know Your Competition

A small business marketing approach can encompass many aspects of trying to appeal to your customers. One area you should definitely look at is competition. Chances are that you are competing with someone for market share either online, in your locale, or both. Competitive analysis can help you improve your business and help you reach customers by figuring out what your competition is doing…and then doing it too, only better.

Small businesses can benefit from gathering market intelligence. And with the advent of the internet, it’s easier to do that than ever. You can analyse a competitor’s business model from afar and use this information to the distinct advantage of your business. You can do this reactively and even more important than that: you can do it proactively as well.

Things you can analyse from a competitive analysis, include:

-Determine which keyword phrases your competition is ranking for within top search engines, such as: Google, Bing, and Yahoo! If they are successful, it can be quickly evident whether or not those rankings are helping them and you can figure out how they went about attaining those spots. You might be surprised to find out that some of your competitors are at the top spot by default or fluke. Very little effort on your part could de-throne them.

-Check page rank and source of incoming and outgoing links. You can gather reporting to help you measure how your competition is gaining online rankings and that can help you decide on an appropriate approach.

-Gather market intelligence on the reputation of your competitors. If you can figure out what their weaknesses are, you can do a better job in those areas and when people go looking to buy your product or service online, they can find out that you are the expert in a particular area.

It used to be that larger businesses kept a lot of their marketing secrets under wraps and it was difficult for their competitors to find out those secrets. But the internet makes a lot of marketing facets very transparent and that can work to your advantage, especially if you are just starting out as you can benefit from someone else’s hard work.

Not only can you see who is leading the pack in your niche for organic search engine traffic but you can also carefully dissect those results and use them to your advantage. Many small business marketing consultants make competitive analysis a service offering and there are tools you can use to help you gain insight into your competitor’s business and marketing model that will help you find ways to surpass their success.

You’d better believe that once you achieve success (if you aren’t already there), your competition will be looking closely at your marketing techniques and strategy. Small business marketing is vital for success in today’s economy and the web provides some great tools, allowing you to gain a competitive advantage.

How to Write a Business Plan Tips You Need To Know When You Write a Business Plan

How to Write a Business Plan Tips You Need To Know When You Write a Business Plan

A business plan is in essence a creative writing project. You want the business plan to be an interesting read, not a long boring discussion. You have to put on your marketing hat and make your company’s future sound exciting. How to write a business plan is a challenge for any entrepreneur. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Write your plan in a style that fits your industry and your management team.

The plan for a sports bar company would sound much different than a plan for a bank. Make your plan sound like you; put some of your personality and philosophy in the plan, so after reading the plan an investor or lender would feel as though he/she knows you.

Be enthusiastic.

When you talk to entrepreneurs about their company, they usually get so enthusiastic that they almost wear you out. Then you get their business plan and it reads like the operations manual that came with your VCR. The purpose of the plan is to create excitement in the minds of the investors, in other words to activate the area of their brains devoted to greed.

Avoid getting mired in technical jargon.

Internet companies, medical companies and computer companies all tend to dwell on minute details about their technology and don’t adequately develop the business reasons why they are going to make money for themselves and the investors.

A CD-ROM can’t replace a mind.

More and more entrepreneurs are relying on business plan writing software. These products are sometimes helpful in formatting the plan and creating the financial schedules, but they can’t formulate your strategies for you. The heart of the is explaining how you are going to sell more of your product or service than your competitors, and operate your business at high enough profit margins to generate a superior rate of return for investors.

The CD-ROM you might purchase has no idea how to do any of this. It’s spent nearly all of its life on a shelf, in a box.

A Solid Presentation Is Key

Does the plan include a title page with your company name, a person’s name and the address and phone numbers? Don’t just clip a business card to the front page, it could get separated.

Has your plan been proofed and spell checked? And by a real person, not just your word processor?

Did you check all abbreviations or acronyms to make sure the first time they’re used they’re explained, ie., World Wide Web (www)?

Have you gone through the plan to make sure all technical terms are explained?

Are the pages numbered?

Do the page numbers for the index match the actual page numbers?

Have you edited the plan to see what you can include in the Appendix rather than in the body of the business plan?

Has someone unfamiliar with your company read the plan and understood it?

Is your executive summary limited to no more than 3 pages?

Have you had someone unfamiliar with your company read just the executive summary and understand your company?

Are your margins at least one inch wide on each side, top and bottom?

Is your font size at least 11, preferably 12?

If you are using a word processing system which allows color graphics, have you changed the color graphics to grayscale for printing? Or will you be printing the business plan in color?

Have you checked to make sure you didn’t use too many fonts and font sizes?

Have you taken advantage of bullet points, shading, indents, and borders to add visual interest to your business plan? (Just don’t go overboard.)

Is the use of your page titles and headings consistent in format throughout the business plan?

You can print your business plan on both sides of the paper, just make sure it’s printed on quality paper so that the printing doesn’t bleed through to the other side.

If you are using duplicating or copying services to print your business plans, is the quality nearly perfect?

5 Things You Must Know About Business Plans

by donuzz

5 Things You Must Know About Business Plans

First, if you’re only reading this article because you want to find a good format for writing a business plan, then you will find some good formats, templates and software at Intuit’s website – you know, the same people who make QuickBooks, Quicken and TurboTax. Well, if you go to the Intuit website, then you will find its new business plan service under the name of “JumpUp.” And even better, some of the templates and software are free. But, I have a feeling you might have a few more questions about business plans, so here are a few more pointers.

Second, something is more important, however, than just the writing a of business plan. The most important thing is that you decide WHERE you want your business to go and HOW you want to get there. Your decision about the where and how of your business goal is more important than the writing of it.

Third, the next most important thing is your specific use of the plan itself. If your business plan’s purpose is to serve as a guiding light to you and your key people, then it will be in that type of format. If its purpose is to create measurable goals, help evaluate progress towards those goals, and guide decision-making, then the plan might take a different shape. And, if your business plan’s purpose is to attract investors or to obtain a loan, then it might be in a different format altogether.

Fourth, and a special note for start-ups, if the business plan is for a start-up business and is for the last 2 purposes (measurable-goals/decision-making or investors/lenders), then I recommend a specialized process. First, write a business plan as if you were writing it to be your guiding light. I have worked with many clients with a new business who should not be writing an investor/loan business plan just when they are starting up the company. Why? Because a business plan should not be a something that you create just so that it sounds good to other people (or yourself). The plan should really be an actual reflection of the desired destination and the means anticipated to get there. So, for the new business owner, these insights and realizations need some time to evolve. Sure, a new business owner starts out with goals, dreams and ambitions. But, it takes time for these goals, dreams and ambitions to mature in the marketplace. That is why it is important early on to write the business plan, but do it with the “guiding light” purpose.

When DO you take the next step and write the business plan with the potential investor or lender in mind?

When the heart and mind agree on the destination and the means of getting there. Then, and only then, is it the right time to transform the “guiding light” plan to a business plan for measurable-goals/decision-making or investors/lenders.

Fifth, once the mind and heart agree, then it is essential to commit the business plan to paper because without a clear destination, there is no basis upon which to make decisions. Decisions should be made with the destination in mind. Writing down how to reach the destination establishes mile-markers that will measure progress. Without some way to measure progress, we are only left with our feelings – and feelings change from day to day or moment to moment. Milestones help us to make needed adjustments while the vision of our destinations keeps us on track.

To sum up, a business plan is important. The pre-work, however, is even more important. The follow-up, which measures our success against the plan, is what gives the plan its purpose.

What you Need to Know About ? Small Business Marketing on Line

What you Need to Know About ? Small Business Marketing on Line

I’m going to share with you a few important tips to Small Business Marketing on line and making it a success. You have your business idea and you have a business plan, now you want to know the best way to marketing an on line.

If you follow these beginning tools, you will have built a foundation in which you can triple the income you are now making. If you’re in the category of zero income then these tools can start producing income for you soon after you implement them.

Build a list of targeted prospects

You want to start to build a list of targeted people that are interested in your business. All you need is their e-mail address and first name. Growing this list is priceless. Once you have this list you have gathered interested people who have an attraction in your online business.

Here are a few ways to gain this information.

1.Offer a free newsletter

2.Offer a survey that takes their name and e-mail address

3.An opt-in box when they arrive on your site that gives them access to something free if they register their e-mail.

Small Business Marketing on Line … with a Newsletter

Offering a newsletter can be a wonderful way to gather prospects and keep in touch with them on a regular basis. People may go to your web site once like it, not have time to really go through it and have the best of intentions to return and they most likely forget.

With a monthly or weekly newsletter you can remind your visitors of your web site along with letting them know what is new this month. If you have a new product to launch you can include links back to your web site where your products are.

My recommendation is to offer something of value in each newsletter so people will open it and share it with their friends as well. This will also help you to build confidence with your new prospects. They will see what you have to offer by giving them a sample every month or week of your knowledge and information about your topic of expertise.

Make sure your newsletter is offered on your homepage as well as your secondary pages. Give away a free e-book if they sign up. It will pay off in the end to have a large targeted list of customers that you continue to market to on a regular basis.

Small Business Marketing on Line… The Survey Says…

They are many types of surveys that you can generate that will help you gather significant information about your prospects, this way you know what they like and what their needs are. Questions your survey can ask; what is your biggest problem? What would you like more of? What would you like less of? Gather as much information as you can so you know what to market and how. This way you know what to deliver because they told you what they need.

This is a valuable tool that you will want to put to use. It takes all the guess work out of what your prospects want to see from you.

Small Business Marketing on line … with Free Take-A ways

Offering something of value for free to collect a targeted prospects e-mail will be one of the best things you ever did. If you give away some wonderful information you put together in a e-book and include it as a down load when they sign up for your newsletter, you have only taken the time to write the e-book after that your work is done and you have gathered many valuable contacts you may not have had otherwise.

If E-books aren’t your thing then give away a free MP3. You can have an informational MP3 that may offer tips ideas or teach something along the lines of the theme of your web site.

If you offer a service you can give a free day or an extra day or so for signing up for your newsletter. You can offer a 20% discount for signing up. This way you get a new client and their e-mail address.
