<p><strong>Business Marketing Versus Consumer Marketing</strong></p>
<p>When you market to businesses instead of straight to the consumer, you need to employ a marketing plan focused on business wants and needs, rather than the end-user.</p>
<p> Business marketing is the practice of marketing your products or services to other companies, who in turn, resell your products or services, use your products in conjunction with their own or use your products in their business operations. In contrast, consumer marketing is marketing directed toward the consumer, or the individual end-user.</p>
<p> Differences between Business Marketing and Consumer Marketing</p>
<p> The fundamentals of both types of marketing are essentially the same, but the issues faced can differ. All marketers select target markets and base their marketing decisions, such as price, type of promotion and distribution based on those target markets.</p>
<p> But the nature of business purchasing is influenced by multiple decision makers, professional buyers and the potential for long term relationships. Businesses generally focus more on a product’s functionality than anything else. Businesses also have the resources to purchase from international markets. This increased competition means your business marketing plan needs to appeal to a wider, and maybe foreign, audience. For example, if you print custom business cards, you should ask your business card printing company if they can print your card information in a different language on the back.</p>
<p> Also, business marketing focuses on logical decision making rather than emotional decision making. Many products that professional buyers purchase will be used at the office so it is harder to create any kind of emotional tie to the product. You need to make sure the purchase makes logical sense.</p>
<p> This logic could also mean that instead of spending lots of money with a traditional business card printing company, a business might go with an online business card printing company, because online business card printing companies can generally offer lower printing prices. It is more logical for a company to deal with an online company that can give them discounts when they know what they want, rather than paying a brick-and-mortar store to give them customer service. Try to make logical points rather than emotional ones when marketing to businesses.</p>
<p> Strategy Differences</p>
<p> Strategy in business marketing must take into account the supply and demand for a certain kind of product, the industry that you are a part of, the industry you are trying to sell to, and trends in the broader market environment. The strategy must also take into account not only your direct business clients, but your business clients’ customers. There’s another layer of customer to consider.</p>
<p> Business marketing also means you have fewer customers, but they are big businesses that require personalized marketing techniques. You might create different sets of custom business cards for each customer, tailoring the design to each customer. You may also have deeper relationships with these businesses because you will sell to them more often than you typically would in consumer marketing. Fostering good business relationships is key to longevity in business marketing.</p>
<p> The biggest strategy difference between the two types of marketing is touting the benefits for your business client, while also touting the benefits for your business client’s customer. Instead of only thinking about the end-user, you need to convey how your product will help the business client to help their customers.</p>

<p>Business to business marketing has advantages over marketing to consumers that make marketing even easier.  Business to business companies market their products and services to businesses rather than consumers in general. Some of the most successful businesses exclusively supply to other businesses.  This is one of the most lucrative business models possible today, and it has proven to be especially profitable when the business is conducted online. If you’re considering going into business providing products or services, then you’ll want to look into operating a business to business company.</p>
<p>With online business to business operation and marketing, many of the expenses of running a traditional business are gone or greatly reduced.  This positively affects all the other aspects of running the company.  Less expense means less time spent managing the money going out, and more money for important things like business to business marketing and promotion. No company will succeed without an advertising and promotion budget.  And as many large, worldwide corporations have shown, the more money spent advertising, the more people become familiar with the brand. That breaks down into more customers and more profit.</p>
<p>A company that does its business chiefly online won’t need the storefront that a traditional business does. And company that relies on business to business marketing wouldn’t benefit from a traditional storefront anyway.  Since traditional customers won’t be coming in and out browsing goods or asking about services, the need for a traditional shop area is eliminated.  This drops overhead costs dramatically.  There’s no huge warehouse or building to pay heating, cooling and lighting bills on, and no need for insurance to protect customers.</p>
<p>There’s also no need to pay a staff to man such a store, which eliminates many of the expenses associated with being an employer.  An online company that chiefly exists through business to business marketing may still have employees and some expense, but the lack of a storefront will greatly reduce the costs associated with managing employees.</p>
<p>Now, money that would have been spent on necessities like payroll and utilities can be better spent business to business marketing and increasing the customer base.  The expense of promotion is also lessened with this business model because it’s so much easier to identify a target market.  There’s not as much need to figure out exactly which consumer to market to as there would be with most consumer products. </p>
<p>With business to business marketing, what it is that you’re offering to business automatically identifies your target markets for you. If you’re selling general business products like paper or office supplies, then your market is large and wide open, and you’d do best finding a particular angle to market your products to each specific industry.  But if you choose a product or service that’s very specialized, your marketing research is simplified a great deal. </p>
<p>The internet is great for b2b marketing because of its word-of-mouth properties. While many of your customers will find you thanks to your business to business marketing and promotion, many more will because of social networking.</p>

<p><strong>Which Small Business Marketing Strategies are Right for You?</strong></p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been in business for myself for over 20 years now, and while my first venture did not fair so well, I did learn a lot about marketing myself and what would be expected of me if I wanted to succeed as an entrepreneur and successfully generate a salary for myself that could allow me the financial freedom of working for others.</p>
<p>Small business owners are a unique group of individuals, are we not? We spend hours on end searching for ways to acquire new customers and improving our business practices. Small business marketing can be a walk in the park for some entrepreneurs, and be stressful for others. </p>
<p>The key of course is to understand what types of marketing for small businesses are out there, and which are right for your business, budget and goals.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a new year, and if you have yet to settle down on a marketing strategy or plan, I encourage you to do that now, right away, before you send your marketing budget in so many directions that you lose grip of it.</p>
<p>Choose small business marketing strategies that fit with your overall goals and simply be consistent with it. You&#8217;ll come find soon enough that your small business marketing budget will be better controlled and produce more results and increase product sales in the long run.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll share with you several small business marketing methods I have used that have had different results, a couple you may already know, while the other may seem a little foreign to you. Don&#8217;t worry, I&#8217;ll explain each..</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t stress this enough. It&#8217;s important to choose the marketing strategies that&#8217;ll work the best for your small business. By doing so, you&#8217;ll be in a better position to point your marketing budget in the right direction and hit closer to your target audience.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s start with &#8220;Blanket Marketing&#8221;,  normally utilized by bigger corporations, basically means spending your marketing funds on advertising to all target markets, no demographics involved or filling a void&#8230;just market to any and everyone it can.  Companies and businesses choose this method for magazine or newspaper advertising.  Unless money is no object to your budget,  this method has no control of who your message is reaching, however it does have the result of reaching a larger consumer pool. The cons to this strategy is COST. Using the blanket method will cost you a pretty penny and at the same time you won&#8217;t be reaching who you really want to. YOUR target market. I mean that&#8217;s the whole point right? You want to reach those who would be more likely to buy your new clothing line or your new soft drink, or maybe you have an amazing new product altogether that a certain market would be interested in. THOSE are the consumers you want to reach.</p>
<p>Moving on to &#8220;Targeted Marketing&#8221;, I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve heard of this one before. A method in which you choose a specific target market (or demographic) and only focus your marketing there &#8211; not over here. THERE.</p>
<p>The beauty about target marketing is that you are more likely to increase interest and revenue be reaching the right people. Sounds simple enough, but many businesses are missing the mark and prefer going the route of blanket marketing, hence losing a lot of potential profits and wasting valuable energy. I don&#8217;t know about you, but losing money is not why I got into business for myself.</p>
<p>So it pays to have a market in mind, and work on reaching that audience.</p>
<p>And finally, marketing your business through social networks.</p>
<p>SMM (Social media marketing) is when you promote your brand/business by making your presence known within social media networks (such as Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon, Myspace, etc). Building your fan base, getting followers and increasing your friends list.</p>
<p>You have to keep in mind that the key to social media marketing is that it&#8217;s not really there to provide instant business, but rather increase your business or brand visibility to ultimately convert &#8220;friends&#8221; into buying customers.  You can also blog and post in forums to try and harness some new business. The con side however is that social media marketing can be a lot like blanket marketing.</p>
<p>So there you go, all you need to do now is figure out which marketing is right for your business and focus your energies there.</p>
